Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting John Grisham virtually to an audience of several hundred at home (wow!), welcoming him “back to Austin” for this first time since his appearance at last year’s Texas Book Festival. The bestselling author sat down with event host and part-time bookseller, Meike A., to discuss his latest novel, Camino Winds, take some audience questions, and recommend a few reads from his own personal quarantine period.
Watch the replay here on Facebook, and read up on his reading recommendations below.
In a bid to make this quarantine as memorable as possible, Grisham took a deep dive into the Walker Percy bibliography and read all six novels he’s written. A favorite of many is his slim work, The Moviegoer.
The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson
Grisham loves the way the pages turn in the latest Erik Larson history book. It recounts for readers in intimate detail the first year of Winston Churchill’s tenure as Prime Minister of England during the early days of World War II.
Race Against Time by Jerry Mitchell
Grab a signed copy of Race Against Time, an impeccable piece of reportage by Grisham’s friend and award-winning journalist, Jerry Mitchell. It details Mitchell’s decades-long search for the Klansmen behind some of the most heinous acts of the Civil Rights era.
Deacon King Kong by James McBride
The latest Oprah Book Club pick is also one of John Grisham’s favorite reads this year. Described as “deeply felt…and profoundly humane” (New York Times Book Review), Deacon King Kong tells the wise and witty tale of the fallout of a shooting witnessed by multiple people.
The Boy from the Woods by Harlan Coben
Who doesn’t love a good Harlan Coben thriller. His latest gets the thumbs up from Grisham and is described by Meike A. as “incredibly multi-faceted and deeply entertaining.” (Read her full review here)
