So, is there anyone else out there who is under the spell of Tom Nook? I know it’s not just me. I saw YA author Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) caught a snapping turtle the other night. Woot!
For those of you who don’t know what “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” is: It is the most adorable video game on the Nintendo Switch, in which players catch fish & bugs, plant flowers, craft various items, decorate a house, and play dress up, all while interacting with the cutest animal neighbors you’ve ever seen. It’s sort of a modern way to play dollhouse. Tom Nook is the raccoon who runs the island on which most of the action takes place. The game is for all ages and is a comforting, chill escape from reality. I know players as young as four, to as old as . . . well, let’s just say, older than four. Ahem.
The game, a term that should be applied very loosely since there is no competition or end, does have moments to spur creativity and problem solving – players can create custom patterns, do landscape design and interior decorating, not to mention the fashion choices. The game also makes a player manage their money (Bells is the main game currency), do math (the Stalk Market), and players can learn quick facts about the fish, bugs, and fossils they collect for the wise owl who runs the museum, Blathers. I told you it is super cute.
