Hello! Austin Events for the Literati is BACK! It’s been almost an entire year since I’ve been able to dedicate time to find all the literary-themed events going on in Austin every month and write about them.
So, here we go!
Each month I’ll be investigating events around town that might pique the interest of book nerds, the literature obsessed, and those who enjoy stimulating entertainment and socializing.
Not surprisingly, Austin has a number of things going on every month the BookPeople community would enjoy.
Lucy Chaplin: Science Starlet
The break-out character of the Halloween Man comic-book series is getting her own special issue and here’s a party in her honor.
Bedpost Confessions Storytelling Show

(Not just for) Ladies Night: stories by Ebony Stewart, Jenna Valentine, Julie Gillis, and Maggie Burger.
“BedPost Confessions features performances about sex, sexuality, and gender. Each show has something for everyone – including humor and wit and thought-provoking wisdom – all while providing new ways of looking at sex and relationships.”
General admission tickets: $15 in advance OR $20 at the door. VIP and student options also available.
Sh!t-faced Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet
Shows at The Spiderhouse Ballroom: July 5th, 7th, 14th, 20th, 21st @ 7pm
Shows at The North Door: July 13th, 28th @ 8pm
“Sh!t-faced Shakespeare® is the deeply highbrow fusion of an entirely serious Shakespeare play with an entirely sh!t-faced cast member.”
Sh!t-faced Shakespeare® is part of Magnificent Bastard Productions, a group of actors, writers, producers, and artists who buck convention, orthodoxy, and sobriety. They are mightily entertaining, verily;-)
Tickets are $16.50. Follow @shitfacedshake on Twitter for updates!
Story Circle Network’s 9th Women’s Writing Conference
“Widening the Circle, Opening Our Hearts”
July 20-22, 2018 @ The Wyndham Hotel
“The Story Circle Network is dedicated to helping women share the stories of their lives through memoir, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama, and to raising public awareness of the importance of women’s personal histories. We carry out our mission through publications, a website, classes, workshops, writing and reading circles, and woman-focused programs. Our activities empower women to tell their stories, discover their identities through their stories, and choose to be the authors of their own lives.”

- Summer camps for 3rd – 8th graders

“Through its activities, ABAC seeks to advance the book as a vital contemporary art form, preserve the traditional and robust crafts related to making books, promote the contemporary arts of making books, inspire diverse artists and learners, and engage the community in creative, interpretive, and educational experiences, including the improvement of literacy for people of all ages.”

Austin Events for the Literati is researched, curated, and written by former BookPeople bookseller Sarah Holdgrafer. Its purpose is to make it easier to discover events that would interest people in the literary scene or people that read the BookPeople blog, here in ATX. It is by no means comprehensive!
So, if you are hosting or know about, a literary-themed event here in Austin in the upcoming months, email sarah.holdgrafer (at) gmail dot com and let her know about it (hopefully with at least a few weeks advance warning)! The Austin Events for the Literati blog post goes up around the 1st of every month.
NOTE: These events are not produced by or affiliated with BookPeople. We just think they are great, that you’ll like them too, and hope to see you there!
For official BookPeople events, please see the BookPeople Events Calendar!
