BookKids: Read Something COOL This Summer!

The days are long and the weather is HOT– you need something COOL to read! Below, the Kids team recommends a few books to keep your summer reading fresh and fun.

Whether you’re taking a dip in Barton Springs Pool or hiding at home enjoying the AC, we all need something cool to read this summer! The Kids team worked hard at creating this ice-cream truck display featuring some of our most beloved reads of the season.

We had a blast coming up with different ideas to celebrate the summer, and this was the perfect opportunity to get a little *punny*! You can see the literary inspired treats on the ice-cream truck’s windows: Newbery Push-Pops, Nancy’s Fancy coconut-cotton candy swirl, Giving Treats, Hervé Tullet Interactive Creams, and– a personal favorite– Mo Chillems popsicles.

During the summertime, we love to keep our reads light and fun! One of our go-to read-alouds is The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli– great for storytime, bedtime, and any time in between, this sweet book celebrates one of the most delicious summer treats.

Sophie Blackall’s latest, Hello Lighthouse, is already a bookseller favorite. Art Director Tomoko says, “Sophie Blackall is one of my favorite illustrators–her style is so charming it makes my heart full every time I see her delicately rendered characters and the love they have for each other. The story of the lighthouse caretaker is so sweet and soulful–with a rhythmic recounting that plays up the wonder and magic of the ordinary. Her patterns and textures are incredible and bring a sense of the tangible to these pages, her color palettes are always perfect, and her waves remind me of why I love the water!”

We suggest Lynn Brunelle’s Camp Out: The  Ultimate Kids’ Guide from the Backyard to the Backwoods. Are you taking a long road trip and looking for ways to keep busy? We love The 50 States Fun Facts and Dan Santat’s Are We There Yet?
