I was present last year for this epic event, which included Marlon James (who just won the Man Booker prize!) and Marie-Helene Bertino as contestants, and David Yow of The Jesus Lizard as a judge. This year is going to be even more epic!
But, what the hell is Literary Death Match, anyway???
From the website: “Literary Death Match, co-created by Adrian Todd Zuniga, marries the literary and performative aspects of Def Poetry Jam, rapier-witted quips of American Idol’s judging (without any meanness), and the ridiculousness and hilarity of Double Dare. Each episode of this competitive, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four famous and emerging authors (all representing a literary publication, press or concern — online, in print or live) who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three all-star judges. After each pair of readings, the judges — focused on literary merit, performance and intangibles — take turns spouting hilarious, off-the-wall commentary about each story, then select their favorite to advance to the finals.”
Last year the finals included a contest of Literary Charades, and by that time most of the audience, panelists and judges, were more than a little toasty. Did things get out of hand? Maybe. Maybe not. What happens at The North Door, stays in The North Door, as they say. One thing is certain though… everyone had a rip-roaring good time. Also,I learned just how much booksellers, writers, and other literary professionals can drink (*ahem* it’s a lot). So really, I guess two things are certain.
So, join us, please. You won’t regret it!
