BookPeople is currently hiring event and birthday party staffers for our big, busy indie bookstore. We’re looking for eager, hard-working, friendly book enthusiasts who understand that bookselling and author events are fun, but they’re also work. We do not sit around and read books all day (much as we’d like to). Bookselling, as anyone in the business will tell, is also not a high-paying gig. Plenty of perks do come with the job, however, including plenty of opportunities to snag advance copies of new books before they’re out, meet authors and celebrities, and enjoy the camaraderie of a community full of book nerds.
To apply to any of the following positions:
- Download, print and complete this application.
- Indicate at the top of the application which specific position you’re applying for.
- Deliver completed application to our main information desk at 603 N. Lamar Blvd.
(Or email to online (at) bookpeople.com).
Event & Birthday Party Staff
Event Staff: This is a part time position on our illustrious Events Team (weekly hours vary depending on store event schedule). Shifts typically begin at 5pm, though start time does vary. Most shifts are evenings. Event staff works both in-store and off-site events. In-store, event staff is responsible for setting up and breaking down our event space, liaising with visiting authors, and facilitating author events from start to finish, from setting up chairs and moving bookshelves to running smooth, efficient book signings. Event staffers interact with many, many customers and must be able to maintain a positive disposition during the fast pace of large-scale events. Must be comfortable speaking in front of and giving instructions to crowds of all sizes.
Birthday Part Staff: Birthday party staff overlaps with event staff. Party staffers execute our fun, fabulous, frequent literary birthday parties for children. Party staffers must enjoy interacting with and engaging children, filling up helium balloons, singing Happy Birthday, serving cake, and generally commandeering a room full children. Party staffers must also feel comfortable reading picture books aloud (and doing all the voices).
