Reading Recommendations from Roxane Gay

When an author opens an event with erotic fiction about Mr. Rogers, you know you’re headed for something special. We’ve been following Roxane Gay online for quite some time now and were so happy to discover she’s as charming, witty and ready to talk about Beyoncé in person as she is on twitter.

Hearing about her childhood experiences in Haiti, as well as her family’s relationship to the country now, provided a rich backdrop for her reading and discussion of An Untamed State. We tried not to overwhelm her with too much twitter love after the fact, but the truth is all of the booksellers who were there that night fell in love (and went home with signed copies of the book). We can’t wait for collection of essays, Bad Feminist to come out in August 5th, 2014, and hope to have her back for another visit then.

Until then, we were able to get a list of books to keep us occupied. Here are Roxane Gay’s five recommendations in time for the summer.

The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi
NW by Zadie Smith
Pym by Mat Johnson
Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon

Signed copies of An Untamed State are now available on our shelves and via bookpeople.com.
