What We’re Reading This Week

“I really love Beekle because it’s a story about making your own dreams come true – getting out there, even if it’s scary doing it. The book also made me think about what kind of creature I might’ve thought up as a kid; mine would be blue – my favorite color – and he’d have a nightlight in his head so I wouldn’t be afraid of the dark.”

The Painter by Peter Heller
From the author of The Dog Stars!
On our shelves May 6, pre-order now.

“The arrival of Peter Heller’s newest book, The Painter, came as a welcome surprise. I took the book with me on a camping trip recently and fell into the story as quickly as I did with Heller’s previous novel and debut, The Dog Stars. The Painter follows the story of an artist whose past is riddled with mistakes and tragedy which he will seemingly never shake. Heller paints his landscapes beautifully using common names of plants and animals so that you’re pulling (either from memory or referencing the nearest field guide) detailed images of the painter’s world. The Painter is the perfect read for summer!”

Stoner by John Williams

“I’ve had more than a few people tell me I have to read this. I even had a really good conversation with a customer about it the other day, and I thought, ‘OK, I gotta step up.’ It’s not like anything I’ve ever read before. It’s a simple and ordinary story about Will Stoner who is from a poor farm family. He goes to university with the plan to major in agricultural studies to be able to help run the farm. Instead, he falls in love with literature. It’s a beautiful book about a life of changing directions. There’s one passage in particular in the book that made me cry instantly. It’s just beautiful and surprising.”

Coming To My Senses: A Story of Perfume, Pleasure, and an Unlikely Brideby Alyssa Harad

Coming to My Senses is amazing and awesome. It’s a memoir about her experience with perfume. This delightful and beautifully written book resonated with me a lot. It’s partly a description of different scents and also about her journey and experiences with perfume, discovering the power of scent. I’m excited about perfume for the first time in my life and I really want to learn more.”
