Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds

“I’m reading Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds and I gotta say, it’s pretty bad ass. The story is told from the perspective of former soldier Tanner Mirabel, who is out for blood after the woman he loves is murdered. Reynolds has been lauded as a master of the Space Opera, and I can see why. Tons of action, locales, and richly drawn characters make Chasm City a pleasure to get lost in.”

Concerning the Spiritual in Art by Wassily Kandinsky & M. T. Sadler

“The basic premise is that art arises from a connection between the artist and how that artist experiences the world. It’s an interesting idea, and I just started looking into this. To me, that’s the basic tenet that an artist lives by. But, to see the way Kandinsky fits this into his own thoughts on color, line, form, etc is really interesting. He shows his version of the world through those elements while chronicling his journey and evolution as an artist. For art to be art, it has to come out of a connection.”

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

“I am really enjoying this so far. The main character, Theo, is this young boy that has all this crazy stuff happen to him. I’m about halfway through and at the start of the book Theo is about 12-13 years old and he gets swept up in this terrorist event at an art museum which leads to the death of his mother and him becoming an inadvertent art thief. Left without any other family, he has to journey out on his. This book just makes you want to keep reading. I don’t read very many fat books because I don’t have the time or the attention span, but this one keeps you going.”

Starting with Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Nayler

“I’m just coming to this series because it was featured in the New Yorker. I WISH I had had them while I was growing up. This is the first book in a massive decades spanning 27 book series that follows Alice throughout her entire life. I’m just starting to dig into this. In this first book, Alice is 8 years old and her mother died three years prior. Her father, brother and her are living in Takoma Park, Maryland. She’s coming to a new school, new friends, and she really wants a pet. Third grade is a lot busier than second. She’s this amazing proto-feminist, awkward, intelligent third grader whom I’m excited to see her grow up. It’s a young readers book, but it’s definitely not juvenile. I find the infinitely passionate Alice particularly relatable as well as her family.”

  1. The alice series is really great. I have just started reading them, the last few months. I only have the last four books. Once you start reading you can’t stop. All the events that have happened in Naylors books are easy to relate to. I would definitely give this series a 4.
