A CONSTELLATION OF VITAL PHENOMENA Awarded First John Leonard Prize

In another round of exciting book award news this morning, the National Book Critics Circle Award announced its 30 finalists for best books of 2013. There are some fantastic books on their lists, including The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, and Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief by Austin’s own Lawrence Wright.

This year is the first year NBCC has awarded the John Leonard award for “a debut work of note in any genre” and we’re thrilled to see Anthony Marra’s remarkable novel A Constellation of Vital Phenomena receive the prize. One of our top ten books of 2013, many of our booksellers have loved and raved about this affecting story of people living in the devastation of civil war in Chechnya. (More love over here. And over here.)

Winners of the National Book Critics Circle Awards will be announced in New York City on March 13.

  1. I love the title of this book. My 2013 new year’s resolution was to read more books with unusual titles so this would definitely have made the list!
