HYPERBOLE AND A HALF (The Book): Comprised of Awesomeness

~post by Katie B.

Allie Brosh writes a blog called Hyperbole and a Half. Everyone should go there immediately and start reading… Well, right after you finish reading this. I’m very excited because her blog is now being made into a book that will be on our shelves at the end of this month:

There are many undeserving blogs that have made it into book form. THIS ISN’T ONE OF THEM! So deserving! It’s been around since 2009 and now gets millions of visitors each month. It is the funniest, most wonderful blog I have ever read. Allie has a natural talent for storytelling. Her personal experiences hit a note everyone can relate to and her superb, simplistic MS Paint drawings manage to coax emotions and nuances you wouldn’t expect.

The book has tons of new stuff plus some favorite stories from her blog. It focuses on some of her more serious topics, like depression, identity and self-worth, which she deals with beautifully and with humor, interspersed with the hilarity of her dogs, childhood adventures and awkward social encounters.

Before this book comprised of her awesomeness comes out on October 29th (you can pre-order a copy), I want to get all of you who are not in the know…in the know. I thought I should give you a crash course and link to a few of my favorite posts:

The Alot – I like this one a lot.

Spiders Are Scary – They really are.

The Simple Dog – Everyone knows a dog like this.

I Finally Got To Call Poison Control – Allie fulfills a dream.

If you are a blogger yourself, or are interested in the actual mechanics of it and how some people can support themselves with it, her FAQ is full of really smart and useful information. She talks about her thoughts on advertising and donations, coming up with ideas, copy writing, plagiarism and lots more.

So now you have an idea what you’re missing. Go catch up!!

  1. I am so unbelievably excited for the release of this book! I have re-read some of her posts time and time again and I still laugh so hard I cry. As an RA, I’ve also found her posts about her experience with depression to be immeasurably useful. This is definitely going to be something I ask for for my birthday, and will probably be given to multiple friends over the holidays.

  2. Glorifying depression. Hmmmm. I just read the one about the dinosaur costume…Makes me think of possession from satan. I do not glorify this. I think its sad and a prison in which she lives. But everyone seems to love it. They will disagree with me initially unless the Lord gives them sight to see. Grown Men wouldn’t find this appealing. I know that.
