The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Alessandra is the second born daughter of a nobleman, who spends her time scheming and breaking hearts while she waits for her chance to be introduced into society. Once her elder sister is finally engaged, Alessandra comes up with her greatest and most devious plan yet–seduce the newly crowned Shadow King and kill him to inherit his kingdom. But the Shadow King has powers nobody seems to understand, and the power of love may just halt Alessandra’s plans altogether. She killed for a broken heart once, but is she willing to do it again? Find out in this wonderfully devious and *spicy* romance.

The Appointment by Katharina Volckmer
In The Appointment, a routine doctor’s visit goes awry when a patient unburdens themselves of a life’s worth of transgressive thoughts and repressed trauma; explores the tormented German psyche ad nauseum; and embarks on a major life change. It’s dark and hilarious, a little sexy and very transgressive—I gasped at several passages. I want everyone to know about this scary good debut that flew under the radar hard this year.

The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis
I’ll admit that, like so many others, I only picked up The Queen’s Gambit after binging the Netflix series. But no matter how I was led there, I was so glad to have ended up with this book in my hands. Sharp, witty, and dark, Beth’s journey had me riveted from the first page to the last. Even readers with no knowledge of chess will get swept up in the intrigue. This is certainly a book I will return to again and again.
