School’s back in session at BookKids!

We can’t believe summer flew by so quickly, but alas, here we are: it’s back-to-school time! We LOVE helping proud parents find a special gift for their young readers, or kids searching for that perfect title to calm first-day jitters. We put together two displays featuring a few of our most beloved back-to-school titles, including some bookseller favorites.

Display 1

Our store displays are full of fun, silly, beautiful books about those quintessential back-to-school moments: meeting the teacher, making new friends, exploring the colorful contents of your lunch box, and of course– the joys of nap time.

Are you looking for a book that will make the most mischievous students giggle? BookKids bookseller/proud troublemaker Merrilee loves How to Get Your Teacher Ready by Jean Reagan and Lee Wildish, the creators of How to Babysit a Grandpa and How to Catch Santa. We recently featured this at our Back-to-School storytime to celebrate teachers and appreciate everything they have to do to prepare for the new school year. Full of humor and charm, it’s a perfect gift for teachers and students alike! Merrilee’s also a fan of quirky sibling duo Charlie and Lola from I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato, who return with their own school adventures in I Am Too Absolutely Small for School.

Another great way to encourage returning students? Give them titles that aren’t necessarily “back-to-school” themed, but inspire enthusiasm and spark creativity, like Javaka Steptoe’s Radiant Child or Corinna Luyken’s The Book of Mistakes. For older readers, we are big fans of the Girls Who Code books, which teach us about the wonders of coding, inspiring readers to one day create their own apps, games, and more.

Our Kids inventory manager Staci suggests going a different route, with My Pop-Up Schoolhouse, a “cute, interactive set with not too many little pieces– parents will appreciate this– that preschool-age children will adore!” Staci also recommends picking out picture books starring established characters that little ones recognize, such as Peppa Pig and the Busy Day at School and Maisy Goes to Preschool.

Our kids event coordinator Eugenia is a sucker for the heartwarming, beautifully illustrated School’s First Day of School, by Adam Rex and Christian Robinson. She says, “This is one of my go-to’s for parents looking for a book to commemorate the first day of school! Adam Rex’s sweet sense of humor, along with Robinson’s gorgeous, iconic style– full of bright colors and bold shapes– makes for a great addition to any kid’s library. Seriously. Just look at this beauty!”
