This post comes from our former bookseller Steven Warren.

Untitled drawing (4)There are a number of high water marks that a person hits on the way to actual, mental adulthood. Things like financial independence, the onset of bodily failure, and becoming genuinely annoyed by teenagers and their antics are all telltale signs of maybe kind of being almost a for real grownup, but, among the more difficult hurdles of maturity is that of forming an authentic, adult friendship with your parents. Dave Hill’s journey – like that of so many professional comedians – has been protracted and begrudging; however, the fact that he has reached adulthood under duress may be what has imbued him with the punch drunk Dave Hill inferno that blazes unceasing just behind his winking Dave Hill eyes.

In his new book Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dave Hill comes to terms with his seat at the grownup table through a series of essays that examine his emotional growth and blossoming friendship with his retired father following the tragic loss of his mom. What he finds is that, overall, he has the emotional wherewithal to catch anything the world chucks his way and that his dad, once an imposing authority, when you get to know him is kind of just a goofy, old dude. These new stories take us from suburban Ohio to a New York City tenement to a Mexican prison to right back in suburban Ohio. Dave is a delightful banana head for every occasion, and Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is a thunderous crescendo of literary whimsy.

Dave Hill is a regular contributor to McSweeney’s, The New York Times, Salon, and Guitar World and is the host of The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU. Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is his second book. His previous collection is entitled Tasteful Nudes:…And Other Misguided Attempts at Personal Growth and Validation, and it’s great.

Please join us at BookPeople on Monday May 23rd at 7 p.m. as we welcome Dave Hill back for another triumphant, bibliomaniacal happening. If his previous book tour is any indication, Dave Hill is going to do whatever Dave Hill wants to do, so let’s not bother speculating about what that’s going to be and just come out for a rocking, weird time.
