The effects of Hurricane Patricia couldn’t dampen our spirits when we had the great privilege of hosting Brian Selznick at Westlake Performing Arts Center in October for his first Texas tour.
Although the weather unfortunately dampened our scheduled pre-show festivities, Brian’s presentation about his latest book, The Marvels, dazzled attendees–as did his spiffy tuxedo. We were especially enthralled by his inventive homemade book trailer, his fascinating discussion of the Dennis Severs House in London which provided inspiration for The Marvels, and of course by his experience having The Invention of Hugo Cabret turned into a movie by Martin Scorsese!
Thanks to the last minute generosity of Scholastic Press, we were also able to provide tickets to this event to many local Austin students who were inspired by the work of Brian Selznick. Thanks, Scholastic!
If you have not yet read The Marvels, we urge you to delve into its golden pages (yes, they are literally edged in gold) to experience a layered, epic story that’s one part spectacle, one part family drama, and one part love story. Profound and surprising, this book begs to be read and discussed together, one generation with the next.
We were lucky enough to meet him at BookCon this year… but not lucky enough to catch him in that tuxedo!
