Fall Kids & YA Author Event Preview

We have tons of great events for young readers this fall – from picture books to middle grade novels to YA, we’ve got all of your kid lit needs covered. Take a look, mark your calendars, and join us! Events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. 

INGRID LAW – Switch 
Thursday, September 3 at 7PM

Ingrid Law’s chapter books Savvy and Scumble are among our favorite stories to recommend to young readers. We’re not alone –  Ingrid’s books have been placed on more than 30 state reading lists, and have earned accolades from Publishers Weekly, Oprah, and the Smithsonian. Savvy was named a Newbery Honor book in 2009. Tonight, she’s here with Switch, another heartwarming story about the magic of friendship and the power of family that is a companion to Savvy. Bring your young readers and join us!

DREW DAYWALT – The Day the Crayons Came Home

We all remember the day the crayons quit – who could forget?! Bookstores and coloring books across the world were confronted with picketing crayons who just wanted a chance to demonstrate their full creative potential. Now, we’re ready to celebrate The Day the Crayons Came Home, the new book by bestselling author Drew Daywalt. He’ll read to us and sign copies of his books! Dress as your favorite color and bring your gently used crayons to donate to donate to Crayon Collection for underfunded classrooms.

DON & AUDREY WOOD – The Full Moon at the Napping House
Monday, September 21 at 6PM – Pajama Party!

We are simply over the moon to welcome the creators of one of our favorite picture books of all time, The Napping House! After 30 years (and over 2.1 million copies sold), Don and Audrey Wood have written and illustrated The Full Moon at the Napping House, the perfectly crafted companion to a beloved classic. In The Full Moon at the Napping House, persistent moonlight is keeping everyone in the house from sleeping. Finally, a surprise musically gifted visitor sends sleepy Granny, her energetic grandson, and their menagerie off to dreamland. Put on your favorite pjs and join us as Don and Audrey read us their new story, do an illustration demonstration and sign our books!

LEIGH BARDUGO – Six of Crows

We’re so excited to welcome Leigh Bardugo to BookPeople on her Magic and Mayhem tour for Six of Crows! We love the Grisha Trilogy and can’t wait to dive into Six of Crows, a stand alone novel takes place in the Grisha universe. Bardugo will appear in conversation with fellow YA author Julie Murphy, whose new book, Dumplin’, will also soon be on our shelves. We’re cooking up plenty of magic and mayhem tonight! Join us!

Special Storytime with ADAM RUBIN – Dragons Love Tacos
Saturday, October 3 at 11:30AM

Oh how we love to love Dragons Love Tacos. It’s one of our favorite new picture books, a modern taco-inspired classic! This morning, we’re in for a special treat, because the author of Dragons Love Tacos, Adam Rubin, is here to read us his stroies! Did you know that Adam is also the author of Secret Pizza Party and a new book, on our shelves later in October, Robo-Sauce? Storytime is going to be a blast today! (But not the kind of blast that will burn down your house in the middle of a taco party. We’re hiding the hot salsa. We learned our lesson there.) After Adam reads to us, he’ll sign copies of his books. Join us!

Once Upon A Chapter Middle Grade Tour!
Monday, October 5 at 7PM

Enjoy fairytales? Tonight’s authors bring their newest middle grade tales, all of which offer a twist on the classics! Sleeping Beauty, Grimms’ Fairytales and many others are represented this evening. Bring your young readers down for a fun, fabulous night!

Thursday, October 8 at 7PM

BookPeople is honored to welcome Chelsea Clinton to our store with a new book that tackles the biggest challenges facing us today and gives readers a deep understanding of the world around them—and how anyone can make a difference. Combining facts, charts, photographs and stories about children and teens who have made real changes big and small—in their families, their communities, in our country and across the world—It’s Your World will inspire readers of all ages to do their part to make our world a better place. Clinton will give a brief welcome at this event and then sign books. Tickets are required for the signing and are only available from BookPeople. Saturday, October 24 at 6PM

You are cordially invited to an evening of marvelous mischief, spectacular storytelling, and feats of bookish brilliance heretofore unseen in the city of Austin! Brian Selznick, bestselling author and illustrator of Wonderstruck and The Invention of Hugo Cabret, will take the stage at Westlake Performing Arts Center to present his latest creation, The Marvels. With the magic of Topher Bradfield, BookPeople’s Literary Camp Director and Master of Ceremonies, and the talent of a troupe of artists, actors and assorted other inventors, we will transform the theater into a land of adventure and imagination. Crashing waves! A mysterious shipwreck! A time-traveling photobooth! Many wonders await! Special Sunday Afternoon Storytime!

Bring your young readers down to the store today to celebrate for a special Sunday afternoon storytime with two of our favorite Austin authors! Liz Garton Scanlon will read us In the Canyon, a beautiful new book that introduces readers to the marvels of the Grand Canyon through a child’s eyes. Susie Kralovansky will be here with Twelve Cowboys Ropin’, a rootin’, tootin’, cowboy’s version of Twelve Days of Christmas. Join us for a snack and storytime!

Wednesday, October 28 at 7PM

Be afraid… Be very afraid… Three authors of terrifying, spine-tingling, soul-shivering Young Adult novels descend upon our second floor this evening for a night of Halloween Horrors. Come dressed as your scariest best – there will be a prize for best costume! Ghoulish treats await as Gena Showalter (Alice in Zombieland), Amy Lukavics (Daughters Unto Devils) and Kady Cross (Sisters of Blood and Spirit) summon the spirits lurking on their pages. Be here! JACK GANTOS – The Trouble In Me

  1. I loved The Day the Crayons Quit and used it endlessly with my Year 5 class last year. I can’t wait to get to Waterstones and purchase the new ones. So many lesson plans!
