Austin Events For The Literati – July

Each month I’ll be investigating events around town that might pique the interest of the book nerds, the literature obsessed, and those who enjoy stimulating entertainment and/or socializing. Not surprisingly, Austin has a number of things going on every month the Book People community would enjoy.

One Page Salon

The Whip In – Tuesday, July 7th @ 7pm

Hosted by the venerable Owen Egerton, the One Page Salon is a monthly gathering of writers who share ONE PAGE of a current work in progress with the audience.

This month features: Marc Savlov, Stephanie Noll, Chris Mattix, Tyson Midkiff, Desiree Prieto, and Judith Egerton! This event always ends up as standing room only, so get there early to get a seat, a drink, and something to eat!

The One Page Salon is every first Tuesday at The Whip In. Join the One Page Salon Facebook page to keep updated!

Nerd Nite

The North Door – Wednesday July 8th @ 8pm

Okay, Nerd Nite is not a literary themed event, but Nerd Nite is for those of us who love to learn (and also like to drink while doing it). Previous Nerd Nites I have attended have included lectures from PhD holding astronomers, psychologists discussing the effects of unconscious bias, a video chat with Alexandra Cousteau (Jacques Cousteau’s filmmaker granddaughter), and many more.

This month’s Nerd Nite contributors are discussing the animal kingdom! How and why we domesticated animals as pets, the effects of robot animals on the psyche, and a look at what makes college mascots so compelling.

Nerd Nite is every 2nd Wednesday of the month at The North Door (502 Brushy St), and cover is FREE!!! Go to the Austin Nerd Nite page for more information.

Anthony Bourdain

Bass Concert Hall – Thursday, July 9th @ 7:30pm

Cookbooks are books too! Professional Chef and TV personality, Anthony Bourdain, will be making a stop on his world tour at Bass Concert Hall to discuss his life’s work and his travels.

Love him or hate him, Bourdain’s got his finger on the pulse of the world food scene, and his books are both popular and influential: Kitchen Confidential, Treme: Stories and and Recipes from the Heart of New Orleans, and The Nasty Bits, just to name a few. Tickets to the show start at $42.50, and the VIP tickets include a meet and greet after the show.

Tween Book 2 Movie Club

Round Rock Public Library – Thursday, July 9th @ 2:30pm

Do you have a child that is not quite yet a teenager??? The Round Rock Public Library is hosting a screening for tweens! They’ll watch the 2014 blockbuster film adaptation The Boxtrolls. Snacks and a discussion of the book the film was adapted from, Here Be Monsters!: An Adventure Involving Magic, Trolls, and Other Creatures, written and illustrated by Alan Snow, will follow the movie. It’s free fun for ages 8-12!

Aziz Ansari Modern Romance Book Tour

The Paramount Theater – July 14th @ 7:30pm

Actor and comedian, Aziz Ansari (of The Daily Show fame), is now an author. His book, Modern Romance, written with sociologist Eric Klinenberg, is a hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s sharpest comedic voices.

Purchase Tickets Here! Tickets are $46 and entitles you to a copy of the book (which you can pick up at Book People).

Jaws On The Water

Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow – July 11th and 25th @ 8:30pm

Did you know the 1975 Steven Spielberg film, Jaws, was based on a book? I have known this for years, but I was well into adulthood before I knew this fact. So I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that this event really is book related… Now that that’s settled…

The Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow is hosting a screening of Jaws at the Texas Ski Ranch, where attendees will float on the water while enjoying the scariest shark movie of all time. I can neither confirm, nor deny, the existence of divers in the water that might try to mess with you during the movie.

Tickets are $30, and include your inner tube rental.

Alamo Kids Camp – Matilda

The Alamo Drafthouse

Kid’s camp screenings throughout July at multiple locations

Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, this critically acclaimed adaptation came out in 1996. Nearly twenty years later the film, starring Mara Wilson and Danny Devito, is still winning hearts, just like it’s source book.

Check The Alamo Drafthouse Event Page for showtimes and theaters!

Naked Girls Reading – Midsummer Madness

Salvage Vanguard Theater – Saturday, July 25th @ 8pm

This month, Naked Girls Reading of Austin will be delving into madness in literature. Our cast: Dawn Muses, DoubleDown Dixe, Ruby Lamb and Zaftigg Von BonBon, are going to be reading from authors who were either considered quite out of their minds, or suffered from societal misunderstanding of their creative drive.

“I mean, maybe I am crazy. I mean, maybe. But if this is all there is, then I don’t want to be sane.”  – Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Last month sold out, so get your soon!!!

NOTE: These events are not affiliated with Book People, except that we think they are great, that you’ll like them too, and hope to see you there!

Are you hosting, or know about, a literary themed event here in Austin in the upcoming months???  If so, email and let her know about it (hopefully with at least a few weeks advance warning)!
