BookPeople is proud to partner with the Austin American-Statesman for our monthly Statesman Selects program. Each month, we get together to select one book you absolutely must not miss. The Statesman Selects pick for April is James Hannaham’s new novel, Delicious Foods. Check out the Statesman’s review of the novel and join us here at BookPeople on Friday, April 10 at 7PM when Hannaham reads from and signs Delicious Foods here at BookPeople.
An author and conceptual artist, James Hannaham is also a graduate of the Michener Center at the University of Texas at Austin and a creative writing teacher at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute. His first novel, God Says No, was honored by the American Library Association. Highly anticipated, Delicious Animals is a modern-day slavery tale centered around three unforgettable characters: a son, his estranged mother, and Scotty, her crack-cocaine.
In a starred review, KIRKUS called Delicious Animals a “textured, inventive and provocatively funny novel.” Here’s what others are saying:
“James Hannaham’s new novel is a tour de force. Gripping, haunting, and deeply moving, it beguiles the reader with the urgent immediacy of its characters’ lives, while also reverberating with universal themes of freedom and enslavement, love and survival.” —JENNIFER EGAN, Pulitzer Prize winner for A Visit from the Goon Squad
“This is a book of astonishing originality and power. In Delicious Foods, James Hannaham has created a wholly new world—a hallucinatory place shot through with struggle and terrible deeds—but one never lacking light or hope. Hannaham reinvents the Southern gothic with prose at once brutal and lyrical and drop-dead gorgeous. This is a hell of a novel.” —DAVE EGGERS, author of The Circle
“Delicious Foods is a strange and compelling American horror story, arrived at through fresh narrative strategies. A mother, a son, drugs, workers enslaved in a gruesome nightmare, love and survival—this is a wonderfully conjured novel.”—DANIEL WOODRELL, author of Winter’s Bone
Hannaham discussed Eddie, a principal character of Delicious Animals, for Little Brown’s YouTube page. (This may excite you: the novel opens with Eddie driving a stolen truck up Interstate 45. He has no hands.)
