Authority by Jeff VanderMeer
“I am 100 pages into this middle volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy. I thought Annihilation (the first in the series) was one of the best books of the year, so I am hooked already even if they seem to be very different types of books so far. Here’s to another great, unsettling read.” Available on our shelves and via bookpeople.com.

Fantasy Life by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
” Fantasy Life is a generation-spanning, fantastical thriller that explores the mythical bestiary of the Pacific Northwest. Malevolent mermaids, wisecracking witches, and ferocious phantoms mold the ongoing folklore of coastal Oregon as a prodigal daughter of magic returns for eitehr the destruction or salvation of her ancestral hometown. I chose this book at random from a musty stack of fantasy novels, and it’s proving to be one of the most rewarding coin tosses I’ve ever wagered.” Available by special order via bookpeople.com.

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro
“The Buried Giant is a fantastical tale about the power and pain of memory. Its protagonists, elderly couple Beatrice and Axl, are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Their quest starts with simply wanting to find their son, and leads to adventures bigger than they, or the reader, could imagine. Ishiguro is a stylistic master whose story will endure in the realm of folklore and fable.” Available on our shelves and via bookpeople.com.

I just loved this book. It blew me away. Sure it’s OTT but the courage to write such an ambitious story, well it worked in my opinion.
