The show, in his own words:
“I’ve been doing it for so long—it was originally developed when Divine and I were sent to colleges and nobody knew who we were, so we had to do something. It’s very much like Female Trouble. I wrote this act where Divine would come out and rip phone books in half, and I’d talk about Buddhist camp movies, and then a fake cop would pretend to arrest us and Divine would strangle him.
Now it’s a 70-minute, totally written monologue that I update with new stuff all the time, completely different from the one released on DVD. It’s an act that I’ve always rewritten and changed, but it’s still about my obsessions: It’s about crime and fashion and music and art and films and the people that are in my films, and how you can have a happy life if you decide you want to be a happy neurotic.”
GOOD LUCK!

John Waters gave me the best advice on dating and relationships ever: If they don’t have books, don’t fuck them.
John Waters is an amazingly upbeat, creative force who has always celebrated the oddballs and outcast of the world with his films. I do love the term ‘hysterectomy pants’ from Cry- Baby.
Today is Tuesday and I wish I had plans to spend the evening with John Waters. We’d drink cocktails in the booth of a forgotten bar where cats roam the floor freely while discussing the golden age of filth. We’d fill the jukebox with laundry money and lip-sync to our favorite 60s girl groups, helping each other redraw our mustaches we’d left smeared on cocktail napkins when the summer sweats set in.
“Have faith in your own bad taste.”
John Waters is unafraid to admit that he holds what we would see as the guiltiest of pleasures, which, for him, are simply pleasures. Said Waters about Justin Bieber, for example, “I’m his last fan!” Both a true and admirable statement.
I love John because he keeps America classy and raunchy at the same time. My favorite quote is “Life is nothing if you’re not obsessed.” and my favorite book is Carsick. (It’s always his most-recent book that’s my favorite!)
Part of my love for him stems from my Baltimore pride. Sure, the National Anthem was written in Baltimore, and we occasionally have sports champions, but more importantly Baltimore gutters are where it’s at. Poe died in one, and some would say John Waters came from one, displaying some of the best parts about Baltimorons–we’re down-to-earth, giving, and not afraid to laugh at ourselves.
Reblogged this on Whim Notes.
An usefull post, thx to admin for the article
John Waters makes me want to be the filthiest person alive!
As a native baltimoron, I’ve had a few run ins with Mr Waters. One such run in occurred at a favorite bar of mine around Christmas. We got talking about the waverly neighborhood, how it had changed etc. I mentioned how I had lived there during the time that they were tearing memorial stadium down (it was where the colts and orioles played for many many years), and I would have to watch the wrecking ball smash into it every morning on my way to work. I relayed this story wistfully, as baseball holds a special place in my heart, saying some mornings nearly brought me to tears. John, on the other hand nearly squealed with glee saying “oh god! That’s my ultimate fantasy! Seeing that place reduced to rubble filled with screaming sports fans!”
I love John Waters.
I love John Waters because he convinced this happy neurotic that even a weirdo like myself can get laid simply by having a huge book collection and for creating my favorite of his characters: “Hi, I’m Raven, I’m a Satanist and I’ll be doing your make-up.”
I love John Waters because he champions outcast and weirdos, and because everything he does has heart. His movies are wonderful–I have a soft spot for Pecker–and I also really love this interview, where he takes the reader on a guided tour of his library: http://colophon.com/privatelibrary/interviews/waters.html.
In the 80’s i answered the phone at a bicycle messenger service in Boston and everyone there were huge john waters fans. at some point they started calling me Taffy because female troible was my favorite movie…everyone called me Taffy for years! female trouble is my favorite waters movie, and shock value is (still) my favorite waters book.
I used to have friends who worked at a very cool movie theater in San Diego called the Ken Cinema back in the 80s, so I got to see a lot of movies for free. I ended up seeing at least two movies a week and there was this great pre-movie bit about not smoking that featured John Waters smoking a cigarette and really enjoying it, while telling everyone not to smoke in the theater. It was so funny, and I wanted to find out who that funny guy was! I did, and became a huge fan!
Oh wow, this is tough. However, basically every line from Cecil B. DeMented is quotable. “Celibacy for Celluloid”!
Also, I missed Waters during FunFunFun Fest due to the whole line/bridge fiasco. I love that he’ll be back.
My father-in-law was the director of “American Bandstand” for 17 years, and I love how John Waters parodied the teen dance show in Hairspray. I also love the fact that John Waters makes ordinary, strange, off-beat, not-conventionally beautiful, and non-conformist people the stars of his works.
“People who are different, their time is coming.”
Very interesting post and comments. I’m particularly amazed at Maria Beach’s comment.
Role Models because of the eclectic nature of John’s role models is my favorite book. John has been a role model himself for so many of us because he makes us feel accepted. John Waters is a treasure of the human race. I love John!
I’ve been a fan of John Waters ever since I first saw Divine in “Pink Flamingos.” Great guy.
Love him!
If you are uninterested in the main story line of the movies just focus at the lamps or something.
