Teen Press Corps New Year Reading Resolutions

If you’re a voracious reader like we are (book nerds!), you will totally get that our New Year’s Resolutions list has nothing to do with diets or money, but it has everything to do with books and more books! Members of BookPeople’s Teen Press Corps thought about what they want to change about their reading habits this year, and have put up some challenging and ambitious reader resolutions.

HALEY

Finish All The Series I’ve Started. I am a serial series starter. Yes. I have started many series over the year but I cannot seem to finish them! Don’t get me wrong, it’s not because they’re not great, they are, I just get distracted and never get back to them. This year I am going to make the effort to change that and it will be great!

Suggested book: The third and final book in the Grisha Trilogy, Ruin & Rising by Leigh Bardugo

WILLA

Read One, Review One. Before I can start a new book, I have to review the one I just read! So far it’s working out really well and I hope I can keep it up!

Suggested book: The upcoming book Mosquitoland by David Arnold

January Buzz Book – All the Bright Places

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet discover two very important things . . .
It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself – a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. It’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them.

But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink. This is a heartbreaking and beautiful novel about two people dealing with their demons while finding a friendship and love that changes them both forever.

BookKids staffer and YA expert Ta’necia said of this book, “My heart . . . my heart. This book is one of the reasons why I read YA.”

John Green – It’s Been TEN Years!

In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of Looking for Alaska, BookKids staffer Ellen reflects on a decade of John Green.

Ten years ago, was there a Facebook? A YouTube? I don’t really remember, maybe it was MySpace, but John was one of the first to use social media in a meaningful way to talk directly with his audience. He speaks to teens without censor, condescension, or as if they are less than. He treats them as equals – intelligent people who can deal with the big things, but delight in the small and sometimes ridiculous, too.

Review of the Week!

Haley~

I absolutely love Chelsey Philpot’s writing style! Even in Paradise is sprinkled with beautiful French and Latin phrases. In addition, Philpot’s characters are incredibly rich and likeable, and all of their actions have very clear intentions. Wow. Five out of five stars! Continue reading.

YA New Release!

Ta’necia is so excited because Fairest: The Lunar Chronicles, Levana’s Story by Marissa Meyer is finally here!! This book tells the store of the Lunar Queen before Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress. The book has really gorgeous illustrated endpapers and includes a teaser for the next book in the series, Winter. Also out this week is the paperback of Cress.

I Was Here is a brand new novel, from the wonderful and amazing Gayle Forman, author of the bestselling book If I Stay. “I Was Here is a pitch-perfect blend of mystery, tragedy, and romance. Gayle Forman has given us an unflinchingly honest portrait of the bravery it takes to live after devastating loss.”-Stephen Chbosky, author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Ooo, it sounds so good!
