There will be no survivors of this month’s Nightmare Factory Book Club. After an hour of discussing The Terror by Dan Simmons, those who haven’t been picked off by the Creature that prowls the cafe will have died of scurvy or resorted to cannibalism. This Tuesday January 20th at 8:00 p.m., BookPeople will be transformed into an arctic nightmare. Make the voyage if you dare, but be warned. It isn’t safe, and there are definitely wendigos.
Like the unforgiving polar ice itself, The Terror by Dan Simmons is a paradox of dynamic flow and haunting stasis. Frozen in place for years on the doomed Franklin expedition through the apocryphal Northwest Passage, the crews of H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror stare mortality in the face as temperatures drop and rations dwindle. All the while, an unseen and relentless beast devours the officers one by one. Mutiny, murder, and cannibalism plague the lost sailors in this terrifying exploration of joy, regret, mysticism, and the human capacity to survive.
The Nightmare Factory Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 8:00 p.m. in the cafe at BookPeople to discus horror fiction in all its incarnations – from academic, literary accomplishments to schlocky, guilty pleasures. Bring your dark midnights of the soul (but don’t forget your Nazi werewolves) down to BookPeople this Tuesday January 20th at 8:00 p.m. to chatter over The Terror by Dan Simmons. Pack extra provisions; there’s no telling how long before rescue will arrive.

I loved this book, I would get up early in the morning and read it when it was still dark and cold outside. I love anything to do with the Expeditions up North.
