Trust Fall #2: DESCENT by Tim Johnston

Trust Fall #2 Announcement

We are thrilled to announce our second Trust Fall pick is the fabulous new novel Descent by Tim Johnston! This is a book that gripped us from the first page, not only for its riveting plot – a girl goes missing in the Colorado Rockies while on family vacation – but for Johnston’s brilliant sentences. As Julie W., who first read the book here, said, “I find myself sucking in my breath and reading sentences over again for their rhythm, their lift, their startling beauty.” This book will make you want to stop everything and read.

We aren’t the only ones who have fallen in love with Descent. This week, Alan Cheuse gave it a glowing review in NPR, saying, “My heart’s still pounding even now as I’m trying to describe the novel, recalling just about every turn and twist of the action, remembering how engaged I was, and how surprised I felt at just how far Johnston could wander from the main premise and still keep me with him.”

Booksellers around the country have been raving about this novel. Algonquin, the book’s publisher, rounded up some of the best quotes in these handy graphics:

This is Johnston’s second book. His first, Irish Girl, is a collection of stories published in 2009. He visited us while on tour for that book:

Irish Girl won the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction and caught the attention of David Sedaris, who included one of the stories in Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules. Sedaris also brought the book with him while on his own book tour that year and recommended that his fans read it.

We’ve included a copy of Irish Girl in Trust Fall packages, along with a few other fun surprises.

Trust Fall packages will ship to subscribers next week. There’s still time to sign up to receive a special package that includes a signed, first edition of Descent, a copy of Irish Girl, and other goodies.

We hope you enjoy Descent as much as we did! Happy reading!

  1. The hype on this has been all over the place. I’m interested because I love suspense and also wrote a book on a missing child (mine is more supernatural though). Tim Johnston is a new author for me so I’m excited to experience it.
