Mahatma Gandhi was born 145 years ago today. To mark the occasion, we’re celebrating Austin children’s author Bethany Hegedus’s beautiful nonfiction picture book, created in collaboration with Gandhi’s grandson, Arun Gandhi, Grandfather Gandhi. Bethany had a terrific launch party here earlier this year, with many touching moments addressing how we handle human anger and turn it into a positive force in our lives. Everyone in attendance took the Grandfather Gandhi “Live Your Life as Light” Pledge:
I pledge to listen to my anger, to see what it has to teach me.
I pledge to not bully or cause harm, with words or with weapons.
I pledge to look for the light, to see it in every situation.
I pledge to find my own unique tools and talents.
I pledge to forgive myself and others. I pledge to live my life as light.
We’re happy to announce that we’re collaborating with AISD, Bethany Hegedus and Arun Gandhi on a program to create classroom resources for Grandfather Gandhi (much like we did with Shana Burg and Laugh with the Moon). Driven by a mutual passion for building literacy and promoting a love of reading, BookPeople and AISD have entered into a new partnership to create book-based curriculum enhancements to bring books to life in Austin schools year after year. If you are an educator and would like information about how your school can participate in this program, send an email to literacy (at) bookpeople.com.
Happy birthday, Gandhi!
