New Kids Releases – 9/2/14

The fall books have started to arrive on the shelves in BookKids, and it’s another great week for new children’s books! We are getting so many new and great books, that it’s hard to keep up. It’s also very exciting.

Over the course of the next several weeks, we will be sharing that excitement and rounding up many of the new kids books that hit our shelves during the fall publishing rush. As always, we’ll continue to post pictures of new releases on the store’s Instagram. Head over to our Teen Press Corps blog for the fall teen releases.

Here is what has arrived on our shelves since our last installment.

brown girl dreaming
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
I’m in awe of Woodson’s masterful use of words and how she uses so few, but exactly the right ones, to tell her emotional, poignant, and inspirational story. This is the story of Woodson’s family, the story of the civil rights in the 1960s, and the story of a girl who will grow up to be the writer she is today. There is such strength in her words.

Merr w happy birthday madame chapeau
Happy Birthday, Madame Chapeau is my pick for this week. It’s by the same author (Andrea Beaty) and illustrator (David Roberts) as Iggy Peck Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer. I am a fan of Roberts and I love these illustrations. The little girl knits! I am a knitter. Plus, all the characters have freaky – in a good way – hats. I love how the little girl’s hat is wonderfully weird but perfect for her.

super sniffers
Super Sniffers: Dog Detectives on the Job by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent
A nonfiction picture book about sniffer dogs! Yes! I love dogs and this is the perfect book for dog lovers of all ages. There is so much to learn about amazing working dogs and all the good they do for humans. There is tons of super information and really cool pictures. Look at that cute dog on the cover! How can you resist?

Can I have two picks this week? I also really love Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales. Yuyi is one of my favorite authors and artists. Her art style can change book to book but it is always colorful, detailed, and evocative (see Harvesting Hope and Nino Wrestles the World). For her latest book, I love how the art – starring a hand-crafted figurine of Frida Kahlo – emotes the beauty of Frida’s hopes, dreams, and soul. There are very few words in this bilingual book, but the artwork fills in the story. Charming touches such as felted woodland animals made me smile. I love Yuyi’s stories.
