Remembering Maya Angelou

Loss, it seems, is often considered a close relation to grief. Today, we must remind ourselves that they are not entirely the same. We must remind ourselves that in loss, there is also joy. To lose something means to have had it in the first place. To die, one must have been born and lived. Maya Angelou was an author, a poet, an activist and playwright. She was more than this. In her passing, we are sad because what we had, what Maya gave us, meant something. But the meaning is not gone. We must remember that in her passing, we have not lost Maya completely, that in the pages she gave us, she remains, and we can visit her again anytime we would like. This is a time to be sad, and it is a time to remember. But we will never have to forget, so long as she lives on our shelves. Rest in peace Maya Angelou. We will miss you.
