Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish by David Rakoff

purchase here“I’m liking this book a lot. I think David Rakoff’s new book is short, sweet, funny, poignant and sad. This book will make you weep. The rhymes and storytelling in this book are just masterful and amazing. It’s reading very quick, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I bought the audio book, as well. Rakoff is the reader. I thought he was one of the greatest voices of all time, and the cancer just ravaged his voice before recording the audio book. It adds another level to the story that brings it to life. Talk about weeping. ”

The Power of Glamour by Virginia Postrel

purchase here“This book is captivating. It talks about how glamour works on the subconscious mind and is used all over the world to get people to do things they probably didn’t really want to do. Glamour triggers desire and causes a ‘non-verbal rhetoric’ that conveys emotions and attachments through images and concepts. Glamour is a tool used to take a concept and make it resonate with you emotionally. It creates a feeling, not a thought, and that’s what sticks with you. It shows how glamour has been used to promote so many concepts: smoking, merchandising, the military. The military, for example,  uses the ‘glamour of battle’ for recruitment ads. The images they used are the in the books, and you can see — I mean who wouldn’t want to jump out of a plane and into an adventure?”

Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh

purchase here“This is absolutely hilarious. I’m a fan of her online comics. This book has had me laughing from the first page. It’s just so funny and RELATABLE. My favorite story so far is about her dogs and their move across country. The dogs, The Helper and The Simple Dog,  just don’t understand what moving is. It shows these cartoons of their inability to cope with what’s going with her and her boyfriend looking absolutely out of their minds with two dogs whining, howling and clawing at the windows. I meant to read just one story last night, and I ended up reading 150 pages instead. And, the fact that they look like they’re drawn in MS Paint makes them just so much better.”

Defiance by C. J. Redwine

purchase here“It’s amazing. I don’t know what took me so long to get around to reading this book. It’s about a girl whose dad was the best tracker in the kingdom. He went out on a mission, disappeared and has been declared dead. But, she doesn’t believe it could be true. If that wasn’t enough to have to deal with, she believes the King wants her dead. She has to deal with constantly looking over her shoulder in fear for her life as she sets out into the woods to rescue her father. Of course, there’s a romance element with her protector. My favorite part is all the action as she fights her way through the forest and the creatures that dwell inside it. She’s a real bad-ass.”

  1. I’ve wanted to read David Rakoff’s book since I saw it on The Daily Show a few months ago. I think I’ll have to move it up on my list now 🙂
