A horse walks into a meeting of the Stand Up Sit Down book club. Flippo and Steve(n), the long-suffering hosts of the aforementioned book club, knowing fully what is expected of them, glance at one another and then smugly ask of the horse, “Why the long face?”.
The horse wipes its tear-smudged horse-nose and responds, “It’s Delores. She’s taken a turn for the worst. You two need to get on the next flight home to pay your respects.”
Aghast, our faithful hosts immediately adjourn the saddened meeting and each make it halfway to his respective hometown before both realize that neither is acquainted with a “Delores”. By the time our intrepid mediators return to the forgotten book club, the horse has stolen every copy of Lizz Free or Die by Lizz Winstead from the shelves. The grifting horse had been, naturally, disgraced hockey legend Wayne Gretzky the whole time.
For those of you who were not raised in a barn, the Stand Up Sit Down book club will be convening live on the scene at BookPeople’s linchpin cafe tonight, Monday August 26th at 7:00 p.m. to discuss Lizz Free or Die by hilarious rabble-rouser Lizz Winstead.
Lizz Winstead is the definition of nonconformity, transcending her right-wing, conservative upbringing to introduce alternative comedy to the streets of the same creative community that fostered Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. Defying Midwestern expectations, she went on to create and mold the life-affirming, liberal juggernauts that are The Daily Show and the Air America Radio Network. Lizz Free or Die, her collection of autobiographical essays, documents her hiccuping, blue-collar hero’s journey as she picked herself up by the rosary beads to not only speak truth to power, but also demand answers from and vehemently mock power. Eventually, power abdicated and bowed to the insurgent usurper Lizz Winstead. Join the Stand Up Sit Down book club tonight Monday August 26th at 7:00 p.m. to “Remember the Daily Show Headquarters in New York!” as we give thanks for the men and women in comedy uniform who have fought for our comedy freedom.
The Stand Up Sit Down book club meets on the final Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the BookPeople cafe to honor those comedy memoirs that burn through the stressful workaday fog to remind us that life is a silly mess full of funny noises and pictures of cats. Swing by this Monday to talk about Lizz Free or Die by Lizz Winstead, The Daily Show, or just that time that the one dude did that TOTALLY EMBARRASSING thing to the….oh, never mind…I guess you had to be there.
