Give Me Summer! Give Me Adventure!

For this next installment of our summer reading series, some of our booksellers took a minute to reflect on the books they particularly loved as boys. These books are not just for boys, of course. From Maurice Sendak to Michael Crichton, these memorable literary adventures will certainly thrill readers of any gender.

MATTHEW
Harold and the Purple Crayon: “A great book exploring the potential for illustrating your own world.”

SHAPPY
Where the Wild Things Are: “It appealed to my anarchist side — the idea that you could lose control and get in touch with your animal nature.”

MICHAEL  &  SALVADOR
Call of the Wild and White Fang:
Michael says “Call of the Wild resonated because of its themes of independence and overcoming hardship,” a sentiment Salvador seconds, saying: “Call of the Wild and White Fang are great books for boys who are trying to make sense of the confusion of boyhood.”

SCOTT
“I loved Around the World in 80 Days for its sense of adventure. It made me want to travel and see exotic places.”

FLIPPO
“I don’t remember all the details now, but I remember really loving The Westing Game when we read it in school. And Bunnicula of course!”

BRUCE
“I was fascinated by all undersea things, and so 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea opened up new worlds for me.”

STEVEN
Jurassic Park opened my eyes to the possibilities of science invading regular adventure. It’s about a dinosaur attack. It’s amazing!”
