SCI-FRIDAY- Coming Soon to a Wormhole Near You: June

June is nigh upon us, which means I can finally spend hours talking about Neil Gaiman right? No, I have to talk about other books that are coming out this month. Okay I guess I can do that. This month’s offerings include another look into the Enderverse, a trip into unknown space, and another tale of Paksenarrion the Paladin.

The Long War by Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter
Terry Pratchett has taken us to many a wonderful place in his long career and a year ago he took us out into space with co writer Stephen Baxter. The Long War picks up a generation after The Long Earth‘s events and continues the stories of Joshua Valiente and Lobsang. The new world of Valhalla is following in the footsteps of the Colonial America it has come to resemble and is chafing at the restrictions of the home world. Now a married man, Joshua Valiente is brought into to handle a crisis situation that could either prevent, or start the greatest war in the history of the galaxy. The Long War hits shelves Tuesday, June 18th.

Limits of Power by Elizabeth Moon
Long ago Elizabeth Moon introduced us to a farm girl who dared to dream of freedom from her father. Now more than two decades later the seventh novel in the saga of Paksenarrion, the Queen of the Elves has been murdered by dark forces in her own kingdom, but her people are blaming the humans. Now Falkieri, the grandson of the Lady and King of Lyonya, must attempt to heal that rift before the bigger storm clouds on the horizon erupt. Magic is reemerging in the world and in most places the old laws against magic are still in place and people suspected of having magical ability are often killed, even small children. Unrest is spreading across the land and only a few stalwart champions can quell it, but the great Paksenarrion is not among them and she must be found before it’s too late. Limits of Power hits shelves Tuesday, June 11th.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
So now I get to my absolute favorite book on this month’s list. Neil Gaiman’s fantastic imagination has taken us to some pretty amazing places over the years and for the first time since 2005’s Anansi Boys, Gaiman has written another adult novel and is ready to take us on yet another wonderful journey. Gaiman has called his new book his most personal yet; a work of modern horror seen from the eyes of a seven year old narrator. So very little is known about this book, but it promises to be an absolutely amazing read. The Ocean at the End of the Lane hits shelves Tuesday, June 18th.

Abaddon’s Gate by James Corey
For years the outer planets of the Solar system have been mankind’s new frontier… now all of that has changed. An alien artifact has created a gate into the deep darkness of space that is waiting to be explored. Jim Holden and his crew are part of the legion of vessels off to explore the the gate but the human race may not yet be ready for the dangers that await them and their greatest danger may be one from among their own fleet. Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham have struck gold twice with the two previous volumes of this series and I can’t wait to get my hands on book number three. Abaddon’s Gate hits shelves Tuesday, June 4th.

Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card
One hundred years before Ender Wiggins was born, the Formics stormed Earth with fire and death. A lone space traveler has raced light years to beat the first alien vessels to our planet, but none of Earth’s leaders are willing to listen to him. But when the first colonies start to burn, all of a sudden they’re willing to listen. By this time only Mazer Rackham and his Mobile Operations Police are in a position to do anything about it. Card goes back to the world of Ender Wiggins to tell the story of why Earth’s greatest hero, and the galaxy’s greatest monster needed to be made. Earth Afire hits shelves Tuesday, June 4th.

So those are the highlights of June’s additions to our Sci Fi and fantasy shelves but keep your eyes open for July’s books because both Charles Stross and Harry Turtledove have new ones on the way.
