Insane City, the first solo novel (in almost a decade) from funny man Dave Barry, hits shelves TODAY. Things to look forward to from this Pulitzer Prize-winning writer in the new book include: Russian gangsters; an eleven foot python named Blossom; a pirate ship that shoots chicken nuggets. In other words, everything you’d expect from the guy who inspired the TV show Dave’s World.
Salon calls the book “hysterical” and “another winner from Barry”. Talking to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Barry reveals just how he hits those funny notes again and again: “I’m assuming that people who read my books are not expecting me to be tasteful.”
NPR also talked to Dave, about not only the book but his also experience as a journalist in the rapidly changing (and changed) world of news media: “I remember the first campaign where I went to Iowa and New Hampshire, and I remember seeing, like, David Broder and all those guys at the bar, and you would hear them talking about what was going on,” he says, “and then a couple of days later, you would read their pieces. And now it all happens in seconds and minutes, and it happens while the speech is going on, it’s being analyzed. … It’s just different. Very, very different.”
We’re very excited to be part of the Insane City tour. Dave Barry will be here at BookPeople next Tuesday, February 5 at 7p to speak about and sign copies of his new book. The speaking portion of the event is free and open to the public. Wristbands are required for the signing and available only with the purchase of a copy of Insane City from BookPeople. We’ll begin distributing wristbands at 9am the morning of the event. If you can’t make it to the event, you can order a signed copy via our website. We ship to insane cities all over the world!
