Word is buzzing today about the soon-to-be released Lawrence Wright book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood & the Prison of Belief. The book’s UK publisher has dropped the title, according to the LA Times. (Knopf is publishing the book here in the U. S. on January 17th. You can pre-order a copy now.)
The Hollywood Reporter posted an exclusive (and lengthy) excerpt from the book today. It begins:
“For five days in October 1998, Tom Cruise, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, secretly drove into a private parking lot in the back of the historic Guaranty Building on Hollywood Boulevard, with the yellow Scientology sign atop.”
Advance copies of this book aren’t available for booksellers, so we’re all eagerly awaiting our first shipment on January 17th. Judging from what we’re hearing so far, it’s going to be a packed house when Lawrence Wright (who is an Austinite, by the way, you can read more about him in this recent NYT piece) is here to speak about his new book on Monday, January 28th at 7pm. Books and tickets for the signing line are now available for pre-order via our website.
If you read The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, then you’re familiar with Wright’s style. That book earned him a Pulitzer Prize and significant recognition. Looks like he’s headed for the spotlight once again.
