Amanda Coplin’s The Orchardist is a rare and beautiful gem. With breathtaking scenery unfolding in the background of a sad, yet hopeful story of three lost souls at the turn of the twentieth century, The Orchardist is a moving piece of literature that will be sure to captivate and enthrall many audiences.
The Orchardist follows a solitary man, Talmadge, an orchardist who carefully cultivates his land and lovingly looks after his orchards and has done so for almost half a century. Still haunted by his sister’s sudden disappearance years ago, Talmadge takes in two pregnant sisters who have run away from a horror they cannot go back to. He places himself between the girls and the armed men who come after them. A moving piece that shocks and does not disappoint, The Orchardist is at once a reflective piece on the power of getting back to the roots of the land and also a fast paced look into the damages that cannot be undone by those around us. I really enjoyed the depth of this novel and the strong characters who were bound to each other. The Orchardist is truly a surprising and evocative tale of what it means to be family not bound by blood, and how some people will give up everything to make sure the ones they love are looked after. The Orchardist exudes magnificent magic onto every page and heartbreaking beauty into each of the characters. This is a book you do not want to miss.
