The Austin Public Library Friends Foundation and the Mayor’s Office are bringing National Book Award Winner Jesmyn Ward to Austin. Her novel Salvage the Bones is this year’s Mayor’s Book Club Selection. This Saturday, March 31st at 1pm Mayor Leffingwell will introduce Ward at the Faulk Central Library, where she will read from her novel, answer audience questions, and sign books.
Salvage the Bones has been celebrated for its intimate look at the life of a poor family living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina. This is a book that hooks you in from the first paragraph with both its close, careful writing and the characters’ raw lives. Ward’s style is gripping and the story an important window into the reality of rural poverty, as well as the dynamics of family life. There’s a clear reason why it won the National Book Award. We highly recommend this book, and this event.
