Why I’m Giving on World Book Night

~Post by Robyn

I was a huge reader growing up. You know, the kind of kid in junior high who was reading Dickens and Crichton for fun. Then I graduated high school and something changed. I quit reading for pleasure. Ten years later I can look back and think of all the excuses I probably had (college freshman, just married, etc.). Then, magically, one day a friend of mine shoved a book in my hand and told me I HAD to read it. She left me no choice. The book was Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone. Little did I know that all I needed was to be handed a book and TOLD to read it for all of my dreams, passions and imaginations to come rushing back. I have been a proud bookworm ever since then, to the point where I quit work at an accounting firm to look for a job at a bookstore (which of course I found, and where I couldn’t be happier).

This is what World Book Night means to me, in a nutshell.

Sometimes we get busy. Life is hectic and it passes you by. That’s always going to happen, so there are always going to be people out there who just need a little jumpstart. We get to be that jumpstart by physically, actively PUTTING BOOKS IN THEIR HANDS. And not just books, great books! I believe in “paying it forward” and if I can help just one person find/remember their love for books (like my friend did for me), then it will all be worth it.

I was one of the first people at BookPeople to sign up to be a giver for World Book Night. World Book Night has made it super easy! Sign up to be a giver, find a distribution center near you (lucky for Austin, it’s BookPeople!), pick up your books on the date and give them away. They just extended the deadline to sign up to February 6th. I ride the bus, so I plan on passing some books out on my way to and from work. Then I’ll probably head over to the grocery store and find people in line waiting to check out, and hand them books. The possibilities are endless. I didn’t have a New Year’s resolution this year, but World Book Night has become something close to it. Let’s get the rest of the world reading with us!
