What We’re Reading This Week

Bone by Jeff Smith

“I picked this up to see if my seven year old son could read it, and found that while he could and would completely enjoy it, I really enjoyed it, too. It’s absolutely one of the best adventure stories I’ve ever read.”

Empire Falls by Richard Russo

“I feel like I’ve spent the last year browsing books and reading whatever has been convenient and now I feel like I’m finally getting back to reading what I’m really interested in with this book, which is existential blue collar literature.”

And Here’s the Kicker by Mike Sacks

“This is a bunch of interviews with humorists and bad ass comedians like David Sedaris, Bob Odenkirk, and Steve Merchant, the guy who did ‘The Office.’ It’s really good.”

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

“It’s awesome. I had no idea what it would be about. It’s a fantasy of sorts. He wrote it in the 30’s and it was released in the 60’s. It’s a commentary on and parody of the Soviet Union, with a pretty odd take on the devil. It’s weird. Weird would cover it.”

Half Upon a Time by James Riley

“This is a very cute reworking of fairy tales for kids ages 8 and up. It’s one novel that takes all the fairy tales and works them together. In it, May from our world lands (literally) on Jack, son of the infamous Jack and the Beanstalk, and the two of them embark on a quest to find May’s kidnapped Grandmother.  They think they are helping the good guys, but are they?”
