New Releases

Here’s what’s brand new on the shelves today. Blurbs (except for Lou Lambert’s book) provided by the books’ publishers.

Big Ranch, Big City Cookbook by Lou Lambert

We’ve been looking forward to this cookbook all summer long. Lambert’s Downtown BBQ is one of our favorite restaurants. We’ll be welcoming Lou here to the store on Monday, September 12, 7p to speak and sign his new cookbook. Before the event, he’ll be cooking up some of his famous BBQ in our parking lot. Everyone who purchases a copy of Big Ranch, Big City is welcome to sample the BBQ. Upstairs on our second floor those who are 21+ are welcome to have a beer courtesy of Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Good times! Hope you can join us!

Just My Type by Simon Garfield

Beginning in the early days of Gutenberg and ending with the most adventurous digital fonts, Simon Garfield explores the rich history and subtle powers of type. He goes on to investigate a range of modern mysteries, including how Helvetica took over the world, what inspires the seeming ubiquitous use of Trajan on bad movie posters, and exactly why the all-type cover of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus was so effective.

Simon anaylzed the font we use in the BookPeople logo – we’re mavericks!

Irma Voth by Miriam Toews

That rare coming-of-age story able to blend the dark with the uplifting, Irma Voth follows a young Mennonite woman, vulnerable yet wise beyond her years, who carries a terrible family secret with her on a remarkable journey to survival and redemption. Irma Voth is the powerful story of a young woman’s quest to discover all that she may become in the unexpectedly rich and confounding world that lies beyond the stifling, observant community she knows.

Headhunters by Jo Nesbo

Roger Brown is a corporate headhunter, and he’s a master of his profession. But one career simply can’t support his luxurious lifestyle and his wife’s fledgling art gallery. At an art opening one night he meets Clas Greve, who is not only the perfect candidate for a major CEO job, but also, perhaps, the answer to his financial woes: Greve just so happens to mention that he owns a priceless Peter Paul Rubens painting that’s been lost since World War II—and Roger Brown just so happens to dabble in art theft. But when he breaks into Greve’s apartment, he finds more than just the painting. And Clas Greve may turn out to be the worst thing that’s ever happened to Roger Brown. Now a major motion picture from Mangolia Pictures.

Cleopatra:  A Life by Stacy Schiff

The huge New York Times bestseller is finally in paperback – Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Her supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order.

Bumble Ardy by Maurice Sendak

You are cordially invited to attend a fancy masquerade at Bumble-Ardy’s in honor of his auspicious ninth birthday. A raucously rowdy, brine-soaked, pig masquerade thrown by Maurice Sendak’s delightfully wild and untamed imagination, to be gloriously precise! Comedy and tragedy shall almost certainly ensue, but a good time will be had … by most.
