Pete the Cat has been a household favorite since he declared his love for his white shoes in his self-titled debut picture book last year. My son, Oliver, demanded countless readings of that first book and has faithfully cuddled up with his Pete the Cat doll every night since it appeared in his stocking last December. Pete’s enthusiastic love for his shoes and his carefree attitude endeared him not only to my son but to me as well. The book was cute, catchy and had the (ever so important) distinction of not growing old despite thousands of readings.
“New Pete the Cat” as my son has dubbed this latest offering does not disappoint. Here, Pete the Cat sets out on his latest adventure – school! He trades his white shoes for school shoes and tackles school with the same devil-may-care attitude that led him through the blueberries, mud and water that tried to ruin his day in the first book. Pete finds himself in the library, the lunchroom, and the playground. All are new and possibly frightening experiences but does Pete worry? Goodness, no! He just keeps on singing his song.
This book couldn’t have found its way into our home at a better time. After two years of staying home with my husband, Oliver started day care this month. It was an emotional transition for all of us but after reading “New Pete the Cat” over and over (and over and over and over) again, my son was ready for his first day. I went into his room that morning and he declared to me: “It is my first day of school! I’m going to the library!”
We grabbed his Pete the Cat doll and headed out the door both feeling a lot more confident because Oliver was rocking in his school shoes!
