BEA Bonus: Erin Morgenstern and ‘The Night Circus’

Erin and Elizabeth

By all reports, the Big Book at this year’s BEA was The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Our Adult Book Buyer, Elizabeth, who was lucky enough to meet Erin this week, recently read The Night Circus and had this to say about it:

“Erin Morgenstern’s debut is cinematic and intoxicating. Taking place in a
magical circus open only at night, it appeals to all five senses so that you
can see the black and white circus tents, the intricate and fantastical
exhibits, smell and taste the caramel apples, hear the ticking of clocks and
the hushed admiration of the circus-goers, and feel the heat of the bonfire
at the center of it all. I don’t remember the last time I was so thoroughly immersed in the world of a book. I didn’t want it to end!”

Other folks are also talking about The Night Circus:

Wall Street Journal

Publisher’s Weekly (PW includes here a nice round-up of picks for the year’s big books from indie booksellers across the country.)

Shelf Awareness (We also enjoyed their coverage of a panel that discussed a little spoken truth in this era of ebooks: Print Keeps the Lights On.)

In reviews, Kirkus called The Night Circus, “Self-assured, entertaining debut novel that blends genres and crosses continents in quest of magic.” Publishers Weekly said, “Debut author Morgenstern doesn’t miss a beat in this smashing tale of greed, fate, and love set in a turn of the 20th-century circus,” and called it an “electric debut.”

Erin will be here at BookPeople speaking about and signing copies of The Night Circus this fall, stay tuned for more details. For now, put this one at the top of your Must Read list and keep it there until the book goes on sale September 13th.
