A little about yesterday’s fire

It wasn’t the mad dash for Rick Riodan’s new book The Red Pyramid. Not even Anthony Bourdain, the sizzling chef himself, that brought down the house. Nay! An electrical fire is being blamed for the flame and water ‘splosion that sent customers and staff alike to the parking lot while BookPeople manager and local hero John Turner put out the flames.

Three fire trucks carrying some of Austin’s bravest arrived on the scene soon after and assessed the damage. Dressed in full gear and carrying axes, the firefighters appeared disappointed that the fire had been controlled, though they were noticeably relieved that our magazine storage, particularly Cat & Kittens Magazine, had survived the blaze.

A mere 40 minutes after the blaze began, the store was back in business to cries of “It’s finally open!” from our loving, and overheated, customers.  Looking danger in the face, and drawing ironic metaphors to classic texts, is what our managers do at BookPeople. And they do it every day with a smile on their face.

Now, as we try to allay the fears of our paperback friends, we wonder if your favorite bookstore was about to burn down, what book (or gift item) would you save?

  1. I would have to save your awesome tote bag (you know…the ones that were made in 1450…hehe) and throw some books in there. That’s what the bags are for after all–to save many books rather than just one! I would probably grab some Yann Martel and Dan Simmons off the shelves as well as some Anne McCaffrey! Glad all is well and that Mr. Manager was able to save the store! I love Book People and am thankful that no one was hurt! 🙂
