Speaking of Censorship…..

Alison sent me an interesting link today. In light of our upcoming Banned Books Celebration, I thought I would post it here and ask for your input. What do you guys think? We’d love to hear your point of view, so please comment and let us know!

  1. I’m torn. I think banning a book (denying a person access to it) is wrong. However, I don’t see a problem with certain restrictions. This book is still available to any kid whose parents want them to read it. They aren’t being denied the right to read it any more than BookPeople denies middle schoolers the right to look at porn (not that I’m comparing this book to porn). However, we do keep certain materials behind the counter so that just anyone can’t access it. And I don’t view that as censorship.

  2. If a kid wants to get a book like that (or “worse”), they’ll find a way. Parents who think they can keep their kids from material like that if the kids want to see it/read it/watch it…well, they’re living in a dream world!

So what should we do with “objectionable” content in a public library? Any kid could come in and check out a YA book with content like this. Are we going to propose limits there too? Where does it end? What’s “racy” to one person isn’t to another. So do we go with least common denominator?

Just seems like a slippery slope to me.
