~post by Bruce I was angry when I turned the last page of Louise Erdich’s The Round House. Not at her. But at the injustice that burned at the heart of her story. We learn that if a Native woman is attacked or abused by a non-Native person on a reservation, the tribe has no … Continue reading A New Ending for THE ROUND HOUSE

Iain M. Banks: A Tribute
~post by Raul M. Chapa I was completely bummed when I read the news last week; one of my favorite writers announced that he has an incurable form of cancer and has only a few months to live. Iain M. Banks's science fiction books have lived on my shelves since I was young. His other … Continue reading Iain M. Banks: A Tribute

The Lists:
The 2013 Best Translated Book Award Fiction (BTBA)
This list is a who’s who of Hipster Presses. Many of my favorites are present: Open Letter, Melville House, New Directions, Dalkey Archive, etc.. The long list is a trip around the world, and offers up a group of books that readers might find particularly challenging. It’s hard to break out of the very American gravitational pull towards authors writing in English. This list helps nudge me in another direction…

GULP: Best Book Trailer of 2013
We love Mary Roach. Her new book, Gulp: Adventures of the Alimentary Canal, dives deep down into the digestive system to explain, in fascinating, classic Roach detail, what happens to the food we eat. In addition to having one of the best covers we've seen so far this year, the book also boasts this awesome … Continue reading GULP: Best Book Trailer of 2013
