Book You Should Read Instead of Studying for Finals

by: Harper C.

There are hundreds of awesome book series to read and obsess over throughout the months, but it seems that when finals roll around, you have a lot more reading time. You could be ahead of your classmates and able to read instead of studying, or like me… You could be avoiding your finals and reading to forget that you should be studying. So as I take my four finals next week, here are the series that I wish I had the time to disappear in.

#1 Percy Jackson & the Olympians

The Percy Jackson series was one of my most-read series in elementary and middle school. With the second season of the Disney show coming out soon, I think finals week is an amazing time to re-read books one and two (at least) to prepare. The series is mostly written at a 5th-grade reading level, so that all ages are able to understand and enjoy the books.

#2 The Lorien Legacies

The Lorien Legacies books are very similar to the Percy Jackson series. The Lorien Legacies use much more mature language compared to the Percy Jackson series, as well as a different mythological background. Instead of Greek / Roman mythology, The Lorien Legacies has the author written lore and does not have ties to history as Percy Jackson does. The Lorien Legacies are written about a group of 9 children and their guardians who have to leave their home planet due to war. They land on Earth and have to survive until they can go back to their planet and renew it to its former glory. There are many storylines and plot twists to lose yourself in.

#3 Truly Devious

The Truly Devious series is a YA murder mystery that is hard to put down. It takes place in a Vermont private school, which requires students to complete a project of their choosing throughout the school year. The main character, Stephanie “Stevie” Bell, loves true crime and bases her project on the mysterious kidnapping that happened when the school first opened. The books are exciting, gripping, and have really good audiobooks to listen to as you ‘study’.

#4 Heartstopper

Heartstopper is a graphic novel series that follows two teen boys and their budding relationship. Since it is a graphic novel, it’s a quicker read than all the other series, but it will still captivate your mind. If you are dying to read it now, Heartstopper is available to read on Webtoon, and there is a 3-season series out on Netflix right now! So many good reasons to read this series instead of reading your study guide!
