Each month I’ll be investigating events around town that might pique the interest of the book nerds, the literature obsessed, and those who enjoy stimulating entertainment and/or socializing. Not surprisingly, Austin has a number of things going on every month the Book People community would enjoy.
The last month of 2015 is upon us and it seems there is a dearth of literary events happening this month. But the quality of the few I’ve been able to find should make up for the quantity.
One Page Salon Tuesday, December 1st
The North Door 7pm

For those who still don’t know, the One Page Salon is a gathering of writers and creators sharing ONE PAGE of a work-in-progress. They’ve officially outgrown their original home at The Whip In and this will be their second month at their new location, The North Door. The One Page Salon is hosted by Owen Egerton, and December’s lineup will feature Charlie Hodge, Rebekah Gainsley, Bernadette Noll, Nettie Reynolds, Helen Merino, and Liondsey Verrill.
As always, the One Page Salon is FREE!
Fantastic Mr. Fox Screening
Wednesday, December 2nd
The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz @ 7pm
The Wes Anderson stop motion animation adaptation of Roald Dahl’s wonderful children’s novel is perhaps one of my all time favorite book to screen adaptations of all time. It’s funny, it’s charming, it’s heartwarming, and a little weird. As is their way, The Alamo Drafthouse is putting it back up on the big screen because, let’s be honest, it’s just better that way. Tickets are $10.50 on Drafthouse.com. Get them soon. This will definitely sell out!
Want to read it, or know someone else who should? We have it on our shelves now!
Lord of the Rings Trilogy Feast
Thursday, December 4th
The Alamo Drafthouse Ritz 11am
Another Alamo Ritz event that is not to be missed! The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Feast is exactly what it sounds like. Watch all three Lord of the Rings films, back to back (with breaks) while enjoying a seven course meal with drink pairings. The feast is nearly as epic as the story itself, and the Alamo staff has been trained to be as stealthy as the Nazgul while delivering this amazing meal (trust me, I used to be one of them!).
Courses include First Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevensies, Luncheon, Afternoon Tea, Dinner and Supper. Screening with Food is $170, Screening with Food and Drink is $200. Again, get your tickets soon. This event sells out every year!
Nerd Nite (#76)
Wednesday Dec 9th
The North Door 8pm (doors @ 7:30)
Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, Nerd Nite hosts a series of talks by professionals in their fields… astrophysicists, marine biologists, computer scientists, futurists, filmmakers, engineers, conservationists, psychologists, etc. They talk about space, technology, the environment, the human mind, the animal kingdom, video games, information theory, and so much more. You can think of it like TED talks, with beer.
The December 2015 edition claims to involve jellyfish, sea turtles, and dinosaurs (I’m not sure in what order, or what context… you know what I know at this point). As always, Nerd Nite is FREE and at The North Door. See you there! Join their Facebook group for more details as they emerge.
NOTE: These events are not affiliated with Book People, except that we think they are great, that you’ll like them too, and hope to see you there!
Are you hosting, or know about, a literary themed event here in Austin in the upcoming months??? If so, email sarah.h (at) bookpeople dot com and let her know about it (hopefully with at least a few weeks advance warning)!
