The Stand Up Sit Down Book Club Paddles Their Own Darn Canoes!

A scant few weeks ago, Nick Offerman graced us at BookPeople with his robust presence, descending from a helicopter he carved out of granite on a rope ladder he wove from snakeskin to present his new book Gumption, which he built out of words and letters.  This Monday June 29th at 7:00 p.m., the Stand Up Sit Down Book Club will convene to discuss the master craftsman’s first collection of autobiographical essays, humor, and errata Paddle Your Own Canoe.  It will be an endeavor proudly undertaken.

Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living does many things (chronicle a farm boy’s ascent to theatrical fame, describe proper “woman wooing” technique, wax rhapsodical on agrarian philosophy, etc.).  The only topic off the table is that of pulling punches.  This guide to life disguised as a memoir disguised as a book of nonsense is as profound, thoughtful, and wise as it is entertaining.  Interspersed throughout the narrative are essays and musings that sweep the spectrum from worldly to indignant to goofy so that, as we learn how a self-described “hick” mastered the ancient art of kabuki, we learn too about the literature of Wendell Berry, the perceived hypocrisy of organized religion, and the best way to belch.  Paddle Your Own Canoe forever cements Nick Offerman in the pantheon of humor and endears this bear of a man into the giant, strapping heart of the world.
imagesThe Stand Up Sit Down Book Club meets on the last Monday of every month to compare notes about comedy and comedic literature.  From print to stage to screen, if it makes you laugh, and someone’s written a book about it, we’ll use it as an excuse to hang out and crack wise.  Join us this Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the cafe at BookPeople to get goofy over Paddle Your Own Canoe by Nick Offerman.  For once in your life, do something you can be proud of.
