Throwback Thursday, TTBF Style

As we prepare for this year’s TTBF, we can’t help but reminisce about festivals of years past. There have been so many fantastic authors that it is hard to choose our favorite moments because they were all favorite moments.
Here is our Teen Press Corps’s recap of favorite things about the 2013 TTBF. Good times!
September Buzz Book: LOVE IS THE DRUG by Alaya Dawn Johnson

“I was very impressed with Love is the Drug. It’s a high-stakes novel that takes you on a roller coaster of political secrets, science mistakes, and the difficulties of having parents who don’t get you. Bird is one heck of a narrator too; fiery and tenacious, which are two qualities that make any book better. I love this in a novel. Suddenly I couldn’t put it down and I was flipping pages right and left. I became attached to Bird, and was invested in her search for the truth and justice.” -WILLA
Upcoming YA Events at BookPeople!
Mari Mancusi is coming to BookPeople this Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4PM! She is the author of Scorched and the just released sequel, Shattered. Shattered follows Trinity, Connor, and Caleb as they try to keep their baby dragon from being discovered. If you love dragons or great books or both, no matter what this is an event you don’t want to miss! Mari is an Austin author.
Join us Sunday, September 22 at 2PM, for author Lindsey Lane and her new book Evidence of Things Not Seen!
About Evidence of Things Not Seen: When high school junior Tommy Smythe goes missing, everyone has a theory about what happened to him. He was an odd kid, often deeply involved in particle physics, so maybe he just got distracted and wandered off. He was last seen at a pullout off the highway, so maybe someone snatched him. Tommy believes that everything is possible, and that until something can be proven false, it may be true. So as long as Tommy’s whereabouts are undetermined, he could literally be anywhere.Told in a series of first-person narratives from people who knew Tommy, Evidence of Things Not Seen by award-winning author Lindsey Lane explores themes of loneliness, connectedness, and the role we play in creating our own realities. Lindsey is also an Austin author!

Review of the Week!

Hayden reviews Schizo by Nic Sheff. “This book is terrifying. To watch a person slowly lose all reason and control while obsessed over a single task is heartbreaking and bewitching. I found myself unable to put the book down as Miles began his downward spiral. This book pulls no punches, softens no harsh realities, and leaves out no detail.” Read the full review.
Odds & Ends
Here are two interviews with two Texas Teen Book Fest authors!

Jandy Nelson speaks with Publishers Weekly about her book I’ll Give You the Sun.
“These characters – Jude and Noah – pretty much crash-landed in my brain, almost fully formed. They brought with them this tragedy and their “first love” stories. Guillermo, too [a sculptor who becomes Jude’s mentor] just showed up. All of that was there, right at the beginning. The challenge became how to tell their really complicated story, because there is a lot going on between and among all these characters.”

If I Stay author, Gayle Forman, has written a beautiful piece in the New York Times about a journey to India, the power of a number, her book, and its heartbreaking inspiration.
After we ate, I told her how we had come into the restaurant because of the name. “July 8 was a good friend’s birthday,” I said, explaining how the eighth of the month was momentous in our lives. “Nick was born on March 8, my parents married on April 8. We have friends and family with birthdays on May, July, August, September and December 8.”
I stopped as Nick and I found each other’s gazes, a silent acknowledgment of the most significant day — Feb. 8 — the date on which the year before, two of our best friends and their two young children had been killed in a car accident.
