Time Is A Flat Circle: The Eisners (An Intermission)

eisner awards

~ post by Joe

So I’m a little behind on my Invisibles re-read and so, in honor of the release of the 2014 Eisner Award nominations, I thought I’d share some of my favorite Eisner Award winners and /or creators. I’m putting this together at the last minute so please forgive me for not having a lot to say right now. What I can say is: Check out some of these books and let me know what books have kicked you in the arse over the last few years.

EXCELSIOR!!!

saga

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
It’s hard for me to describe exactly why I love Saga by Vaughan and Staples. Is it because it’s about interstellar war between two galactic empires? Well, yes, of course. Is it because it’s not even secretly about the triumphs and setbacks of starting a family, of bringing a child into this world? Well, yes, most definitely. Is it because it’s funny, heartbreaking, joyful, and all the other emotions that define the human condition? Pretty much yes. OR IS IT BECAUSE IT JUST PLAIN RULES?!?!?!?! HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ***2014 Eisner Award nominee and most-likely to win.***

wonder woman

Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang
Continuing the exploration of dysfunctional family dynamics that made the Eisner Award winning series 100 Bullets one of the must-read comics of the Aughties, Brian Azzarello has made a Wonder Woman comic that is not only better than the warrior princess has been in a long time, but it’s also one of the best books that DC Comics is currently publishing. Foregoing played out superheroic cliches in favor of reinventing Greek mythology, Wonder Woman is nothing less than a thousand different types of AWESOME! And 90s Chicago icon Wesley Willis makes a cameo!

starman

Starman by James Robinson and Tony Harris
Jack Knight is no superhero. He’s just a regular person. In fact, he’s pretty much author James Robinson and he’s the star of one of my favorite comic books of all-time (and Eisner Award winner), Starman. Do you think capes and tights and superheroes are silly? So does Jack Knight. Did you swear that you were never, ever gonna grow up and become your father and then one day you woke up and realized you ARE your father? So did Jack Knight. Starman is the story of fathers and sons, of legacies, of hometowns. Of heroes.

all star superman

All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly
All Star Superman may well be the greatest Superman story written in the modern era. Told by the superb team of Grant Morrison (The Invisibles, We3, Batman: Arkham Asylum) and Frank Quietly (The Authority, We3, my dreams), it puts Superman in his proper place as a man among men, as well as a god among men, as well as a human being. Even if you’ve never cared for Superman you will love this book. Winner of multiple awards including thwo Eisners.
