Today bestselling author James Patterson announced the beneficiaries of his $1 Million Indie Bookstore Campaign and we’re thrilled and honored to announce BookPeople has been included!
The grant we submitted asked for funds to help BookPeople work with local authors and Austin Independent School District to create book-based curriculum enhancements. We ran a pilot program with 40 Austin schools this year to expand upon local author Shana Burg’s book Laugh with the Moon by providing art, music, and social studies curriculum enhancements and connecting over 3500 kids with pen pals from Malawi. It has been such a success that we are currently putting together a committee with AISD to collaborate on these kinds of programs annually.
Our goal is to make these curriculum enhancements available to as many kids in Austin as possible, because we believe there’s tremendous opportunity to reach even deeper into the Austin community and foster the love of reading through this type of creative, interactive programming. And thanks to James Patterson’s generosity, we have the resources to get the ball rolling.
