QB 1, the new book for young readers from bestselling author and sports journliast Mike Lupica, hits shelves today. We’re particularly excited about this latest novel because Lupica sets his sights on a topic near and dear to our hearts: high school football in Texas.

Lupica has said he based this story loosely on the Manning family. In QB 1, the fourteen year old son of an NFL champion and brother of a Texas State Champion has to step out of his famous family’s shadow and prove himself on his own high school football field.

Lupica spoke to the Today Show this morning about family dynamics and Texas football. The show also posted an excerpt of QB 1:

“Two minutes left, ball in your hands, game in your hands, season in your hands. State championship on the line, the new 1AA championship for small schools like yours. One of those small-town, big-dream schools. Like you were the one in the book or the TV show and you were playing for Friday Night Lights High.”

We’re looking forward to talking with Lupica about what inspired him to take on our Lone Star State’s national pastime when he’s here to sign books on Tuesday, September 24 at 7pm. And because this is, indeed, Texas, we’re celebrating his visit in a BIG way: we’re giving away two tickets to the UT-KU football game to two lucky attendees! You must be present at the event to win. (And they’re good seats, too, y’all!) For more info about the event, visit our website.
