What We’re Reading

SALSALVADOR

World War Z by Max Brooks
World War Z is about a zombie invasion. The invasion began in China and has spread to other countries, there have been dramatic attempts to stop the spread but they have all failed. Its format is part of what makes World War Z so great. It’s told in testimonials from survivors. Max Brooks has done a great job of building suspense, this is a super fun read. You definitely don’t have to be a zombie lover to enjoy it.

Many Lives Many Masters by Dr. Brian Weiss
Dr. Brian Weiss, graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School- Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, did not believe in past lives. It wasn’t until he encountered a patient with severe phobias and anxiety that showed no improvement, that he decided to try hypnotherapy. While under she slipped into deep hypnosis and began to remember things impossible from this lifetime. This book is surprisingly riveting. As someone only vaguely interested in past lives before reading this book, I can’t recommend it enough. There are a whole series of books about “The Masters” by Dr. Weiss, I can’t wait to keep reading.

The Fart Party by Julia Wertz
Julia Wertz is a 22 year old doodler turned cartoonist after a week long stint in bed during a college bout with the flu. Being too dizzy to read books, Julia turned to graphic novels and that’s where she stayed. Obsessed with cheese, comics, biking, and beer (perhaps to the point of detriment)- what’s not to relate to? This story is a little about farts and a lot about the misadventures of a young, crass, very funny, lady flailing around San Francisco. I highly recommend it.

Of Dice and Men by David M. EwaltI’m just about finished with the book Of Dice And Men by Forbes Senior Editor David Ewalt.  It’s a fun and exciting trip through the history of Dungeons and Dragons as Ewalt rediscovers his lost love of role-playing. Part memoir, part cultural history, and part post-apocalyptic fantasy vampire novel, this book is all awesome. So get out your gold pieces and pick up this tome. But beware, it will make you want to play D&D again!
(On a side note, when you get to chapter 13, keep an eye out for the appearance of Jen and Summer. Those two gals are former BookPeople staff members!)
Of Dice and Men will be on sale August 20, click here to pre-order your copy.
